“Are you off today?” – a neighbor once asked, seeing me at 10 a.m., Monday morning, on the landing. And I told him, “I work from home!” The gray-haired senior citizen looked at me in bewilderment through his big glasses and said, “What do you mean, you work from home! Is that a job?”.
The fact remains incomprehensible to our grandparents today – how can one work from home? You have to go somewhere to work and earn money. But times are changing. Now we can stay at home, make a cup of delicious coffee, wrap up in a comfy blanket, turn on our favorite notebook, plug in the Internet and work!
Motherhood and Freelancing
Freelancing has become very popular today, especially among moms on maternity leave. In my personal opinion, a mother should constantly develop and realize herself as a person. That’s why maternity leave should not be a hindrance, but on the contrary, it should help to discover new sides to her personality.
So why do many moms choose freelancing on maternity leave? First, without a break from diapers and feedings you can work remotely. Anytime, anywhere. This is the advantage of freelancing. You are your own boss and allocate the day at your discretion. Moreover, in order to somehow distract from the mother’s duties, you need a certain discharge. Remote work, if it also brings pleasure, helps “switch” to something else. Freelancing for mothers on maternity leave can be their outlet.
What to do on maternity leave?
“That’s all well and good, but which type of freelancing to choose?” – you ask. Yes, there can be a whole variety of options. But deciding on your direction for freelancing is pretty easy. Here’s where to start:
What did you do before you went on maternity leave? Where did you work? Think about whether you can continue to do the same activity only on a remote basis, and with less work. Current vacancies you can find on the freelance exchanges.
Ok, there may be a situation: you do not want to continue doing what you were doing before the maternity leave. Then think about what you want to dedicate yourself to, what you are good at. If you don’t know, then answer the question, “What would I do if I didn’t have to work?” What is your passion? Do you love baking cakes and cookies? Sell them through social media and start your own blog with vivid photos that show the process of making desserts. Do you like to make handmade crafts? Open your online store for free! Are you a keen graphic designer or good at writing texts? Offer your services to publications and online resources.
Maternity is a time for creative realization and turning your ideas into reality. That’s exactly what happened to me. It was after the birth of a child that I got so much energy and motivation to create my own project, and it all worked out. And it’s great.
The most common types of freelancing among moms:
- Copywriting/rewriting/content management/writing. Today, probably every day there are new resources, online stores that need to be filled with texts and products, respectively, people who are able to do this are always in demand.
- Blogging. Communicate with your audience with the help of a blog, if you have something to share. There are different methods for monetizing a blog.
- SMM. Do you like to sit on social networks and know what kind of posts attract an audience? Offer your services as an smm manager.
- Dropshipping is an activity in which you act as an intermediary between the manufacturer of goods and the buyer. Your earnings are a percentage of sales.

The main thing is to determine what you are good at, what you like to do. Just do it from the heart and do not bet on earnings. Business in which you put your heart, and eventually will bring profit. But do not forget that the most important project in the life of every mother is her children and family.
